Personnel went in on D Day on British landing ships, Infantry and Motor Transport ships wearing this uniform. To cover legal and admin they enlisted in the RN for one month with an option to serve a second. This was done because they were civilians.They had the rank of Petty Officer and were paid a special rate of £1 a day
