49th Division / 56th Infantry Brigade

Printed and woven cloth combination formation sign on khaki. Composed of 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers, 2nd Battalion Glosters and 2nd Battalion Essex (infantry bar). Combination also has a service bar for a chaplain. Fought in Normandy and North West Europe. GOC Major General 'Bubbles' Barker did not like the first type 49th Division of a submissive polar bear and changed it to a more aggressive bear (printed). 56th Division is the felt type in Bruno Boulanger's book (c672) embroidered on felt (1944 pattern)
