Indian National Army (INA)

Blackened brass cap badge with 2 blades to reverse. Azad Hind Fauj (Free Indian Army) formed by Indian nationalists in 1942 in South East Asia. Its aim was to secure independence from British rule. Originally formed by Mohan Singh in 1942 and fought with the Japanese in South East Asia, disbanded in December of that year over differences with the Japanese over Japan's rule in Asia. Reformed under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943 and fought with Japan in the Burma campaign in Imphal and Kohima. The legacy of the INA is controversial. It was accused of being complicit in Japanese war crimes. They were viewed as axis collaborators by the British but after the war were seen as patriots by many Indians. Never granted freedom fighter status like those of the Ghandi Movement
